Gene Blocker, Ph.D., is a professor emeritus of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at
Ohio University. The focus of his research has been on ancient art, what we might call "art before art," that is, artifacts which were made before the evolution of the modern concept of fine art (art for art's sake) in which those objects which we today regard and appreciate as art were originally made and used for ceremonial, ritual, and religious purposes. As a philosopher of art, Professor Blocker has been interested in the problems of cross-cultural understanding involved whenever we treat as art what others regarded in some other way. Dr. Blocker has published a large number of books on the subject of aesthetics. Here is a partial
list.
